On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of “Destinazione Paradiso”, Gianluca Grignani presented the new special edition of the album, out tomorrow, Friday 5 December.
Grignani has woven a verbal flow that resembles his music: irregular, pulsating, allergic to rigid geometries. Between announcements, technical digressions and moments of frank irony, the portrait of an author in full movement emerges, focused on the present and aware of his own path.
Here is his story.
THE INTERVIEW
In the new special edition of the album there are unpublished materials. What will fans find?
I'm really happy with what we've built to celebrate 30 years of my first album. Revisiting memories, listening to those emotions again, reliving certain moments with you… it shook me and made me smile, like when you find an old photo.
Among many things, I wanted to give you a special gift: the first unreleased version of “Falco a mezzo”, which was then called “Free the wings”. It's like a fragment of me from thirty years ago, pure and imperfect, but full of that desire to fly that has never left me.
I shouldn't say it but Destination Paradise it is the most listened to Italian song in the world on Spotify and it is in my version. It's a lucky song that belongs to the people.
There are a thousand versions: there's a punk one, a reggae one, even Vanoni made her own version!
Looking back at that period, do you feel changed?
In part yes. Today I'm happy to look at myself. Anyone who hasn't experienced me then can see what I really was like. It's like a small sliding door: a lightness that restores balance.
The theme of “flight”, of paradise, often recurs in your lyrics.
We are children of the papacy, let's say it. The Pope reigned soprano. (Laughs) And so we carry biblical images with us: heaven, angels, sea…
And then I have never been really down to earth when I write: even if I am concrete, I always look for the reaction, never the moral.
What's your favorite from the album?
Destination Paradiseyes definitely this one!
When will your album come out?
And while we're talking about gifts… for my birthday I decided to get one too.
A gift that I built piece by piece, with care, dedication and truth, as is done with the things that really matter. It's a project that I've had within me for some time, and now the time has finally come to bring it to life.
My new album will be released in April: “Verde emerald… Residui di rock'n'roll” the first of a triptych.
A title that already says it all — a color, a sound, a story.
The rest, as always, is up to you.
You said you “used the computer” as your central creative tool. How did this choice influence the sound of the new album?
I worked a lot with the computer, letting myself be guided by its limits and possibilities. The sounds generated by the machine create interesting collisions, opening up new and original choices. Today's music, especially regarding rhythm, has metabolized structures that once would have seemed indecipherable.
Today certain logics and certain irregular movements are assimilated naturally.
This allowed me to push the album towards a balance between electronic, blues and my original matrix.
THE TOUR
Gianluca will return to the live scene with VERDE SMERALDO – RESIDUI DI ROCK'N'ROLL, two concerts scheduled for 25 May 2026 at the Alcatraz in MILAN and 27 May 2026 at the Alleanza in ROME.
The setlist will also include songs that have marked his thirty-year career and the history of Italian music, from “La mia storia tra le dita” to “Destinazione Paradiso”, from “La factory di plastic” to “When you're missing your breath”, from “Falco a mezzo” to “Cammina nel sole”.
The Verde Smeraldo – Residui di Rock'n'Roll live shows are produced and organized by Trident Music, the same agency that accompanied Grignani's debut in 1996 by taking care of his first tour, Fabbrica di plastica tour.
Thirty years later, the artist's return to Trident takes on the value of a symbolic passage with strong historical significance: a new collaboration that resumes a journey that began together and which today, with renewed vision and energy, opens up to a new chapter in his career.
