The traditional Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has once again turned the streets of New York into a massive spectacle, and this 2025 the main protagonist of its opening has been Cynthia Erivo. The British actress and singer opened the 99th edition of the event with an emotionally charged performance of Feeling Gooda theme that has passed through numerous voices since its creation in the sixties and that is indisputably associated with Nina Simone.
Erivo, one of the most recognized artists on the current scene thanks to her role as Elphaba in Wicked: For Goodappeared on a circular platform located in the middle of the avenue, accompanied only by a pianist. The scene, designed to create an intimate atmosphere within the bustle of the parade, allowed the artist's voice to become the absolute center of attention. Dressed in a long burgundy coat and a matching hat, the performer offered a sober and elegant performance that contrasted with the explosion of colors typical of the floats, balloons and decorative elements that fill the city on this date.
Why this song?
The choice of Feeling Good it is not coincidental. The piece, composed by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for a 1964 musical, is an anthem about being reborn and starting over, a message that fits with the optimistic spirit associated with this national celebration. Erivo, accustomed to facing highly vocally demanding repertoires, gave the song a personal and powerful reading that resonated with the spectators gathered on both sides of the street.
