How Harry Styles invented a new pop star model

Music news

As the release of “Kiss All The Time. Disco Occasionally”, a look back at the solo career of Harry Styles who redefined the codes of male pop – and analysis of the single “Aperture”, an unexpected dancefloor turn.

Talking Heads, Depeche Mode and Leonard Cohen on the dancefloor

The podcast episode also takes a deep dive into “Aperture”. Sheffield detects traces of Talking Heads and Depeche Mode, mixed with Chicago house and Detroit techno. (Styles said he listens to LCD Soundsystem, which fits perfectly.) In a change of perspective for Styles, the lyrics are about a collective, with this dancefloor chant: “We belong together”. Sheffield sees it as a song about “a multiplicity of voices coming together on the dance floor”.

The song could also be read in part as a challenge to Styles' imitators — try following it this time.

Sheffield notes what appears to be a deliberate echo of one of Leonard Cohen's most famous phrases — “there is a crack, a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in » — in the central image of the song. “It says a lot about Harry’s musical ambition”Sheffield analysis, “that we can think of Leonard Cohen in such an electro piece, dedicated to the dancefloor. »

The new album Kiss All The Time. Disco Occasionally comes out March 6. The already announced tour dates are being snapped up.
