In an almost summery Milan, where spring seems to have decided to forge ahead without asking permission, we meet Nicolò Filippucci, struggling with his first real recording chapter.
“A Place to Go” is not just a debut, but an emotional map still under construction. Inside, experiences, encounters, attempts are stratified, all those “first times” that in the last year have had a personal impact even before an artistic one.
Filippucci does not seek a synthesis, rather he exposes the process: music becomes a compass of orientation, a space in which changes find shape and voice, without ever becoming rigid in a conclusive definition.
THE INTERVIEW
Let's start with the album. The first song is titled Nuances. What are the intimate nuances of this work?
There are many nuances, even musically. It's a record that contains different things than what I had already played. Each piece is reflected in a place: a physical place, a memory or an emotion. They are places of the heart, or in the heart. “Sfumature” is a term that describes the entire album well.
“All Girls Want Love Songs”: a title that seems to play on a stereotype. What did you really want to say?
It was also born as a studio game. Of course, it's not true that only girls want love songs. We were really interested in overturning this cliché. There is a precise story behind it, but also the desire to dismantle an idea taken for granted and talk about love in a less superficial way.
Love is an inflated theme. Is there anything left to say?
Yes, because love moves everything, even those who write. Music is a way to talk about one's experiences, emotions, even suffering. We have all had experiences related to love. For us who write, it is an almost therapeutic tool. Love songs will always remain central.
Acoustic and electronic coexist on the album. How did you work on the sound?
It was a journey of experimentation. It's the first real record I've worked so hard on, even with others. We wanted to tell who I am, and I have a very broad background: classical, pop, jazz, soul, blues, rap, rock. I really listen to everything. This is reflected in the music. Pop is the center, but there are many deviations around it. I'm interested in exploring, finding my way.
Three words to describe it?
Emotional, sincere, varied.
“A place to go” seems like a personal quest. What is your place today?
It's not just one. There are physical places, safe places to which I return, and emotional places, which help me write. Each song has its place, because it recalls a specific memory. There are many, even geographically scattered. Now I'm moving to Milan, so new places, new experiences are being added.
The live at Magazzini Generali will be linked to the album. What should we expect?
It will certainly be a new live show, precisely because it is built around the release of the album. There will be lots of new things, the opportunity to play and sing new songs. I'm very happy that there will be musicians, therefore music played, something I care a lot about. Returning to the stage excites me, and doing it at the Magazzini Generali even more: I've seen many concerts there, it's a place I've always dreamed of. I hope there will be a live show full of emotions, surprises and novelties.
Will there also be covers in the lineup?
Yes, there will be, although not many. We wanted to include a little something.
The last concert you saw?
Giorgia's at the Assago Forum. It was very emotional, because I grew up with his music: it was one of the first things I sang as a child. I had never seen her live, so it was special. A beautiful concert, from start to finish.
The Sanremo prize: where did you put it?
It's at my house, for now. Every now and then I look at it and I have yet to realize. It is well guarded.
Does it weigh, even symbolically?
Physically, yes, it really weighs, also due to the marble base. I didn't expect it. On a symbolic level there is satisfaction, the inevitable, and also responsibility. But I'm someone who demands a lot from himself regardless. This recognition makes me happy, because it means that we are doing something good. Now I want to continue like this.
The cover has a retro aesthetic, with a sixties car. How did this image come about?
It starts from the location, which for me evokes tranquility and positive solitude, the one needed to reflect. I am a person who is fine alone. Then there's the car, because I'm passionate about engines: we wanted to include something personal. The idea was precisely that of a journey to a place to stop, think, remember. It represents me a lot, so it was the right choice also visually.
Where was it taken?
On Lake Garda. It was also the most convenient solution living in Milan.
Your favorite place?
Home, where I grew up. It's the place with the most memories, my safe place. I'll be back as soon as I can. But in general each place has its own meaning, it evokes something different.
Tear-jerker it is one of the most intense songs on the album. How was it born?
It's my favorite, perhaps the one that represents me the most. It was born in the studio, starting from the music, from a very evocative ride. It all came spontaneously, all at once. It's not one of those songs built and rethought a thousand times. Precisely for this reason I feel it so true.
If you met the Nicolò of the past, what would you tell him?
To continue. To follow his passions and his dream, even when nos come his way. Nos are part of the journey, in fact they are often more useful than yeses, because they force you to improve. I would say don't stop.
