Review: FRANKIE HI-NRG MC – “Vocals and drums”

Reviews

Frankie puts himself in the center and, instead of self-celebrating, he shrinks. It removes, strips away, leaves only the word and the heartbeat exposed.

“Voce e Batteria” is not a greatest hits disguised as a courageous project: it is a radical and essential rereading of Frankie hi-nrg mc's most representative repertoire, stripped of everything except what counts. Texts, interpretation, rhythm. It is the drums alone that support the weight of songs that are already classics of Italian rap.

The result is a direct and powerful sound, which gives new depth to each song and loads the whole with an energy that recalls the origins of hip hop. No frills, no concessions. Just voice, skin and sticks. Donato Stolfi on drums and Dj Stile on scratches do the dirty work with class, and the record breathes.

Frankie brings together some of the most important names in Italian music. Not decorative guests, voices that dialogue with the project. Jovanotti pedals as he knows how, and in Pedal and drums he signs an unpublished verse. Fabri Fibra rocks: in this slim format find the right size, and in Auto-da-fé and drums It takes space for new bars that are pure fiber. Tiziano Ferro navigates between soul and r&b, Elisa flies over the drums, Emma scratches. Diodato brings emotional weight, Raiz is a street voice, Lina Simons enchants.

A record that highlights Frankie's dual talent: lyrical and beat. The only flaw is the absence of a real reworking of Those who think rightpresent only as a citation in Monster generation. It would have been the icing on the cake. A missed opportunity that weighs heavily, especially in a record that has the courage to face its own canon.

An abecedary of hip hop made in Italy. Educational for every young trapper and rapper who wants to understand where the game comes from.
