There is a word that runs through “Primo tempo”, the new EP by Giorgia Faraone: exposure.
Not the social one, rapid and compulsive, but the emotional one. The project was born as a collection of fragments, vocal notes, diary pages, intuitions recorded between airports and sleepless nights.
A personal cinema transformed into songs.
Jazz, soul, pop and a fragility that stops apologizing coexist inside.
Anticipated by the singles “Fragile”, “Cento felpe” (featuring Soulcè) and “Come fa i fiore”, released in 2025, the EP is composed of 6 songs that revolve around the theme of love and move gracefully between melancholy and romanticism.
We met Giorgia and chatted about her “First Time”.
THE INTERVIEW
“First half” almost seems like a fixed point in an already long journey. What does it represent for you?
First half is the first part of a larger project, because there will also be a second half. When I decided to stop, I realized that I had to stop self-sabotaging and finally do something that was truly mine, extremely personal.
I started collecting fragments scattered everywhere: diaries, notes on the phone, voice recordings on the plane. Then when I entered the studio I realized that I had a kind of film of my life in front of me, made up of scattered scenes. Even musically there are very cinematic atmospheres and the word “cinema” often returns in the songs.
This is why I chose to divide everything into two parts. I needed to metabolize those fragments myself before even delivering them to the public. Even the tracklist does not follow a precise chronological order: it is not a linear story, it is more a question of mood, of emotional images.”
You said a very strong phrase: “I stopped self-sabotaging”. How difficult is it to make this type of music in Italy today?
In my case it's a mix of things. I am very critical of myself and this easily leads to self-sabotage. But I'm working on it.
Today the problem is above all to lead people towards deeper listening. We experience everything very quickly, even through social media. We are used to something that has to strike immediately. However, when music asks you for a minimum pause, empathy, attention, it is immediately labeled as “niche”.
Instead, I hope for a different future, where this type of listening can also be perceived as pop. It's already happening in England: there are artists who mix jazz, soul and pop, quietly entering the mainstream. I hope it can happen here too.”
In fact, the English scene seems to have opened a new path.
Yes, absolutely. This year I went to Raye's concert in Bologna and it was very full. When it was finished I thought: then there is an audience ready for this music in Italy too.
Artists like Olivia Dean or Raye are sold out here too. So obviously there's a scene, there's a need. This gives me confidence. There are many Italian artists who are working with soul, jazz and r&b influences. In my opinion it could really become something bigger.”
One of my favorite songs on the EP is Fewer problems, with that very elegant jazz aftertaste. Which pieces do you feel most connected to?
Fewer problems it was one of the first songs written for the record and somehow opened the emotional taps.
Until that moment I was afraid of exposing myself too much, of really putting myself inside the music. That piece instead was born from a real need to express myself. This is why I am very attached to him.
It's also the only track I left practically live. We recorded it like this, naked and raw, because I wanted to maintain that initial truth.
Then there is Fragilethe first single, which contains all that talk about vulnerability that I'm learning to accept.”
So in the “first half” we still work on the cracks. Will flowering come in the second?
I really hope so. We are working on it.”
Is live still your natural habitat?
«Absolutely yes. I love the studio, but the stage is where I really feel like myself. On Saturday we will present Primo tempo with the whole band at the Locomotive Spring Festival, which is connected to the Locomotive Jazz Festival here in Puglia. Then there will be other dates during the summer.
I can't wait to play live.”
