A Japanese man known online as Toco has once again caught global attention after giving his first interview while wearing his custom made dog costume. The story is unusual, yes, but it also taps into something very modern: online identity, personal dreams, public curiosity, and the strange ways people choose to express themselves. After spending a small fortune to look like a collie, Toco has taken his project one step further by speaking to journalists while fully dressed as the animal he long imagined becoming.
A costly dream brought to life
Toco reportedly spent 2 million yen, around $14,000, on a realistic dog costume designed to transform him into a collie. The outfit was made by Zeppet, a Japanese company known for creating models, sculptures, and special effects style costumes.
That is not exactly the kind of purchase most people make on a quiet Tuesday afternoon. Some buy a bike, others redo the kitchen. Toco chose a highly detailed collie suit. Unusual? Absolutely. But also very deliberate.
The costume allows him to live out a long held wish to experience life, at least outwardly, as a dog. He has previously appeared being walked on a leash, interacting with real dogs, eating from a bowl, and moving around in ways that imitate canine behavior.
His first interview in costume
Toco recently gave his first interview while wearing the costume, speaking with the Spanish news agency EFE. In footage from the interview, he can be seen lying down in front of the camera, answering questions through a microphone placed near him.
Other scenes show him walking through Tokyo streets, where passersby stop, stare, smile, and approach him out of curiosity. It is not every day, after all, that someone sees a life sized collie calmly moving through the city with a person inside.
The image is almost surreal: part performance, part personal expression, part internet age spectacle.
Why people are so fascinated
There is no denying that Toco’s story divides opinion. Some people find it charming. Others are baffled. A few probably have the same facial expression as someone trying to understand modern art before their morning coffee.
But the fascination makes sense. In an online world where personal branding has become almost routine, Toco’s transformation stands out because it is so physical, expensive, and specific.
He is not simply using a filter or posting a quirky profile photo. He has invested money, time, and public attention into becoming a character that reflects something deeply personal to him.
Toco says others want to do the same
After the interview, Toco said he had received many messages from people reacting to his unusual lifestyle choice. Among the positive ones, he said some people told him they wanted to do what he had done.
That detail is interesting. What may look like a one off viral story may actually speak to a wider desire for freedom, fantasy, and self expression.
The American Psychological Association has described identity as something shaped by both personal experience and social context. Toco’s case may be unusual, but it shows how strongly some people want to explore who they feel they are, even when others do not understand it.
A strange story with a human side
It would be easy to treat the whole thing as pure internet oddity. Man spends thousands to become dog. Man gives interview as dog. Internet reacts. Done.
But there is also a more human layer here. Many people have private dreams they worry others will laugh at. Most keep them hidden. Toco did the opposite. He built a costume, stepped outside, and let the world look.
Whether people admire him, question him, or simply find the whole thing wonderfully strange, one thing is clear: Toco knows how to get attention.
And in a time when everyone online is trying to stand out, becoming a collie might just be one of the most unexpected methods yet.
