Melissa Auf der Maur does not have a structured and traditional solo career. Disconnected, alternating in this 2026 it returns to digging into its past without trying to make it a relic or anachronistic.
To do this he releases, sixteen years after his previous solo work, “Bass Womb Room”, a record of analogue ghosts, home tapes, intuitions left out of the liturgy of 90s rock. A collection of old 4-track demos that retain a rough and unresolved material.
At the center of everything is the bass which for Melissa is not just an instrument but a kind of underground organ around which to build an intimate landscape, closer to sound art than to the grammar of the rock star.
After Hole and Smashing Pumpkins, the musician refuses the temptation of a celebratory return and prefers to short-circuit archive and present.
The result is irregular, deliberately imperfect, at times hypnotic and experimental. “Bass Womb Room” doesn’t talk about the ’90s but it is an interesting sediment of sound images left inside a box for too long. And it is precisely in this distance that the record finds its reason.
