Thirty years after its release, “Trainspotting” returns to the cinema in a restored 4K version. Danny Boyle’s film will be the protagonist of a special event in Italian cinemas on 19, 20 and 21 October 2026, an opportunity to rediscover one of the titles that had the greatest impact on the cinematographic and musical imagination of the Nineties.
THE FILM
Released in 1996 and based on the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh published in 1993, Trainspotting tells the story of the descent into the depths of addiction through the gaze of Mark Renton, played by Ewan McGregor. Around him moves a gallery of characters destined to become iconic: Begbie (Robert Carlyle), Spud (Ewen Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller) and Tommy (Kevin McKidd).
Boyle brings to the screen a Scotland affected by economic and social crisis, without transforming the story into a simple tale of drug addiction. Trainspotting finds its strength in the subjectivity of the characters, in a physical and hallucinatory direction that alternates black humour, violence, desperation and sudden flashes of lucidity. The film does not observe its protagonists from the outside: it enters their distorted perception of reality.
At the center is the famous Choose Life monologue, uttered by Renton at the beginning of the film. The formula, apparently linked to the normality promised by consumer society, gradually becomes a provocation: choosing life also means questioning which life it is really possible to choose.
Even the title contains a precise ambiguity. Trainspotting is the British pastime of observing and cataloging trains. In the film it becomes a metaphor for waiting, obsession and an apparently destinationless existence, as the protagonists seek an escape from a present that continues to recur.
THE SOUNDTRACK
The soundtrack is decisive, capable of transforming Trainspotting into a cultural object that goes beyond cinema.
Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, New Order, Blur, Pulp and Underworld coexist in a selection that photographs the collision between rock, Britpop, electronica and club culture. Born Slippy .NUXX by Underworld, linked to the final sequence, became one of the symbolic songs of the film and of the British electronic season of the nineties.
The return to theaters in 2026 thus presents a film that does not only belong to the memory of the nineties. Trainspotting continues to talk about addiction, alienation, friendship and the desire to escape with a cinematic language that is still rough and surprisingly contemporary. The version restored in 4K now restores its visual strength to the big screen, on the thirtieth anniversary of a film that long ago stopped being just a cult to become part of the collective imagination.
