The song marks the band’s reunion with Butch Vig for the first time since Siamese Dream.
The Smashing Pumpkins presented “Black Stars”, their contribution to the soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The release marks the reunion of the group with Butch Vig, producer and member of Garbage, for the first time since Siamese Dream (1993), the album that placed them as one of the fundamental alternative rock bands of the nineties.
The story of the song began far from Panem. Billy Corgan was working on a solo album when the band received the invitation to join the project, and it was then that he called Vig to choose, from that material, the piece that best dialogued with the universe of the saga. Recording took place primarily at Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles, with additional sessions in Chicago, the city where it all began for the Pumpkins.
The song comes accompanied by a video clip that you can see here:
“Black Stars” will be included in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (The Album)which will be released on November 13 through MCA, a week before the film’s theatrical release, scheduled for November 20. The album will feature 29 songs written especially for the world of Panem, with Dave Cobb as executive producer. So far, in addition to the Pumpkins, Noah Kahan has been confirmed with “Draw You Out.”
Directed by Francis Lawrence and based on the novel by Suzanne Collins, the film is set 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games and follows a young Haymitch Abernathy, from District 12, on the morning of the harvest for the 50th Hunger Games.
Meanwhile, The Smashing Pumpkins continues with The Rats in a Cage Tourhis tour of North American arenas within the framework of the 30th anniversary of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
