Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan release remix of “Expectations”

Music news

The video clip features the participation of David Byrne and Dan Nigro.

Olivia Rodrigo presented a new version of “Expectations” with Chappell Roan, the first musical collaboration between both artists and, also, the first time that Roan appears as a guest on someone else’s song.

The original song is part of You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in LoveRodrigo’s third studio album, released in June 2026, and this time it adopts a more playful and casual tone under the production of Dan Nigro, a regular collaborator of both. The remix preserves the basis of the original version, but replaces the second verse with a new one written and sung by Roan, who turns the premise of the song on its head to direct those same expectations towards a woman, from an openly queer perspective.

The relationship between the two goes back a long way: Roan was the opening act for Rodrigo on the tours of SOUR and GUTSlong before she became a headliner in her own right, and this summer she was part of the lineup at Daisy Chain Fields, the female-led festival that Rodrigo organized in California.

The remix comes with a video clip directed by Bardia Zeinali, in which Rodrigo and Roan give life to different characters who face each other in The Big Expectations Showa retro-style game show inspired by ’80s and ’90s television, with nods to formats like Family Feud. David Byrne plays Johnny Johnson, the show’s host, while Nigro appears at the end of the clip. The relationship between Byrne and Rodrigo is not new either: the Talking Heads frontman shared the stage with her as a special guest at the 2025 Governors Ball and, earlier this year, released his own version of “Drivers License.”

“Expectations Remix ft. Chappell Roan” is now available on digital platforms and in limited edition physical formats, including seven-inch vinyl, CD and cassette.
