David Byrne learns his dance moves at FKA twigs for Coachella

Music news

The new interview series Artist on Artist of Coachella kicks off this Thursday with a conversation between Armin van Buuren and Adam Beyer. The one that brings together FKA twigs and David Byrne arrives next week — and WECB reveals a first extract where the ex-Talking Heads transmits his most cult steps to the singer.

FKA twigs is already an accomplished dancer, but when the opportunity arises to learn a few steps from one of the best – in this case David Byrne – why not?

In this exclusive excerpt from an upcoming episode ofArtist on ArtistCoachella's new interview series — the first episode of which drops this Thursday on the festival's YouTube channel — twigs enthuses about Byrne's unique movement style: “It’s almost beyond dancing, what you do. It's a form of kinesis, a kinetic representation of music that is so free. »

Byrne, humble, responds with a ” THANKS “before twigs asks him to show her a few steps. “This is the happiest day of my life”she whispers to him after he has done so. From there, Byrne deploys some of his now-iconic, slightly off-kilter choreography for her — staggering as if he were going to fall, leaning as far as possible while still singing, or balancing on one leg while he pushes the note.

When twigs asks him to try one more “groovy”he released a great classic where he lets himself soften and shakes himself like a puppet on the end of his strings.

This improvised dance lesson is taken from the episode ofArtist on Artist dedicated to FKA twigs and David Byrne, which will be uploaded in its entirety next week on the Coachella YouTube channel. The first episode, available today, brings together legendary DJs and producers Armin van Buuren and Adam Beyer to discuss the evolution of trance and tech, their turntable failures, and how the EDM landscape has changed — especially since the pandemic.

Van Buuren confides that he is now much more “easy to DJ”notably because the public has become “more open-minded” to underground electronic music and trance. Beyer completes: “I feel like Covid… kind of reset (the scene), and a lot of things have changed over these two-three years. Some better, some worse. We had the feeling that part of the culture was lost in the transition, but at the same time it was like a blank page. Much less judgment on music. »

Besides van Buuren and Beyer, FKA twigs and Byrne, the series Artist on Artist will also feature conversations between PinkPantheress and Slayyyter, then between Sara Landry, LP Giobbi, TOKiMONSTA and Mary Droppinz. The four episodes were filmed over the past two weekends at Coachella.
