There is a new energy, an awareness that is not only artistic but profoundly human, in Giorgia's present.
After a Sanremo that brought her back to the center of the scene, the hosting of X Factor and a highly acclaimed tour, the Roman singer-songwriter is experiencing a phase of authentic rebirth: between reflection, lightness and an album that marks her truest return.
The culmination of this new season is “G”, the highly anticipated album of unreleased songs that tells the story of Giorgia today.
Almost three years after her last work, “G” is not a concept album, but a project whose only common thread is her: a woman and an artist who has decided to get back into the game, starting from herself and from music.
In the press conference she spoke about herself with irony and intensity, talking about voice, freedom, young authors, feminism and even stadiums (with a laugh in between).
THE INTERVIEW
Let's talk about “La Cura per me”, the duet with Blanco. How was it born?
It was enormous generosity on Blanco's part. He gave a song that could have been kept, he's not someone who jumps on stage to do duets at all costs. He told me: “Thank you, it's written for me”. He wanted to send it to me. When we started working on it, it came to me sung with her voice, so heartbroken, beautiful, emotional. In the joint version, he sang his recording and then mine too, so there is a bit of a before and after shape, you can hear the evolution of the piece. I had asked him to do it together on the evening of the duets in Sanremo, but he was in a construction phase of his new project and had no plans to go on that stage. I understood immediately, it happens to me too that I have to say no when you are not mentally ready. Then it went well anyway, I duetted with Annalisa, which was a beautiful thing.
In “Carillon”, however, who do you talk to? Who is the “you” in the song?
“Carillon” for me is a dialogue with the little girl I was, the one who was in her room with a world inside that she couldn't express. It's a bit like what they told me when I started, at my first Sanremo: that I was cold, that I wasn't emotional. In reality, inside, there was the lava rock that the song talks about. It is a dialogue between me and my very young self, these two halves that, in vain, must become one.
We are experiencing a true Giorgia renaissance. Do you feel it?
(Laughs) I'm a bit of a Terminator, the one who always reforms! Let's say it's another rebirth, not the first. The beautiful thing about not being 20 is discovering that things can change, transform, depending on how you experience them. There are phases that alternate in a wonderful way. I am very grateful to life for this opportunity to understand this. If they had told me this 10 years ago, I wouldn't have believed it. At 26 I already wanted to stop… And yet here I am.
In this album you worked with many young authors. What did you learn from them?
This album was born with the intention of putting me back into music. My collaborators told me: “Now you're going to make music again”.
I accepted, but I needed guidance. Marcella Montella started sending me material, mostly by very young authors. The thing that amazed me was their awareness, especially in relationships, in the evolution of feelings. There are pieces like “Paradoxale” that seem to be written by someone who has lived a lot, but instead they are by very young guys. They have a centering, a shorter but denser emotional experience. They arrive as if they have already learned disillusionment and know how to overcome it. In “Carillon” it almost seems like I wrote the sentences. This record showed me that I needed exactly the opposite of what I did before: I had locked myself in my little room, and instead I needed to go out, to have an exchange, to work in the studio with others, to be guided. It was a return to music in the true sense, like you do in your twenties. A gift to be able to do it now.
After Covid there was an internal evolution. When did the “switch” go off in you that gave you strength again?
After Covid I was in a state of confusion about what to do and how to do it. The music changed quickly. I worked on an album, “Blu” and I did Sanremo 2023. It wasn't a very successful moment on the outside, but for me it was fundamental. I wouldn't have done this year's Sanremo if that hadn't been there.
It was returning to that stage after so many years, testing myself, seeing how I handled it. In that phase there was a fair amount of internal suffering.
I could go down, emotionally. Instead I rolled up my sleeves and started over: I redid the radio promotion, I did everything that needed to be done. That gave me crazy strength.
Then I called Ferdinando (Salzano; ed.) and told him: “Let me have a nice tour”.
He took me on a crazy tour of the opera houses, then the summer and the arenas. It was a fundamental support. Returning to Sanremo this year, after all the work done including X-Factor, with this reacquired strength, was the consequence of that reaction. Sometimes the moments that seem difficult are the ones that help you, if you ride them and don't avoid them. And if you have someone close to you who helps you.
