Mecna's new album is titled “DISCORDIA, HARMONIA E OTHER STATES OF MIND”.
Twelve tracks that mark a new chapter of one of the most recognizable artists of the Italian rap scene, accompanied by a cover signed by the Apulian photographer Piero Percoco and two alternative covers, each designed to represent a different state of mind and the many facets of the artist.
With this work, Mecna confirms his ability to use rap as a tool of introspection, capable of exploring deep and universal emotions. From the writing of “Laska” (2015) to “Lungomare Paranoia” (2017), up to “Stupid Love” (2023) and the latest EP “INTROSPECTION” (July 2025), we read a coherent path of analysis of oneself and others: a journey in which the external world becomes a mirror of one's own experience.
In a genre often dominated by the cliché of the invulnerable man, Mecna chooses fragility and authenticity, without giving up lightness and poetry. The productions of Lvnar and Fudasca, with calibrated arrangements and varied atmospheres, accompany every emotional passage, making the album a perfect balance between introspection and musical immediacy. The result is an empathetic and sincere story, which can bring the listener closer without ever trivializing.
In this interview, Mecna tells us about his moods, creative processes, musical and visual choices, offering a direct look at the genesis of the album and his artistic vision, in a reflection that combines heart, experience and curiosity.
THE INTERVIEW
Let's start from the title of the album, “DISCORDIA, HARMONIA E OTHER STATES OF MIND” which is very particular. Is there a story behind it?
Yes, so I actually wanted the title to be complex but simple at the same time. It's very sincere, because it tells what's on the record: a series of moods. At the end of a piece I talk about non-material things, because everyone already talks about material things; I like to express moods more through music.
It's an album that I worked on calmly and passionately, a record that has lived many lives and that has transformed a lot during the creative process. I tried to put the writing in the foreground, as I did in the “Introspection” EP, without neglecting the more melodic part: less present than in my previous works, but capable, when it is there, of strengthening the story.
The album alternates more introspective moments with lighter and funnier songs. Does the production also reflect this dichotomy?
Absolutely. I worked with two producers, Lunar and Fudasca, who have two different styles. Lunar has been working with me since Laska, my second album: we know each other so well that we almost don't have to say anything to each other in the studio. Fudasca is a new friend, but we immediately found affinity, both musical and human. He sent me productions practically every day and we explored many things together. These two approaches represent the different souls of the album.
The studio for you is also a place of comfort, right?
Yes, the studio is more of a place where you can express yourself freely. I rarely write in the studio; Ideas for melodies are born there, but I do the real writing alone. The production is shared, but the heart of the album, the words, are born in my intimate dimension.
Rap and words are central to your works. Where does this attention to writing come from?
I believe my strength lies in writing in a simple but effective way. I love realism and I think it also reaches the audience because it's authentic. I've always been a big fan of music, and that drives me in my listening and writing.
Musically, what are the influences of this album?
In addition to self-talking rap, I've fallen in love with American indie artists over the last couple of years. In the sound I looked for that raw and dirty component that I found in the projects that most impressed me among the releases of recent years (Dominic Fike, Dijon, Mk.Gee, Bon Iver, Kevin Abstract, Rex Orange County). I didn't chase perfection, but I let myself be guided by instinct and immediacy.
The visual side of the album is very refined. How did you choose the covers and illustrations?
The main cover is a photograph of Piero Percocowhich represents a metaphor of the human being: something beautiful that is consumed by others. Then there are other versions: a photo of Simone Biavati and an illustration of Noemi Vola. I'm more of an art director, choosing the collaborators, but giving them freedom over the mood.
The tour will be extensive, with a date also in London. How do you relate to foreign audiences?
It is the first date outside Italy. There will be Italians abroad, but I imagine also local people interested in discovering my world. It is an opportunity to discover cultural and musical points of contact. Europe fascinates me, and playing there adds a new energy to the live dimension.
Was writing this album therapeutic?
Yes, writing is a way to discover myself and lighten up, even with lighter pieces. I hope it's therapeutic for the listener too, because I often receive feedback that confirms this possibility.
Have you found your peace with this album?
I made peace with my demons, understanding what makes me feel good. But there is always a bit of discord: the desire to do more, to reach more people. I believe in a healthy, lucid dimension that does not erase energy but makes it aware.
