Interview – TOMMASO PARADISO welcome to “Casa Paradiso”

Music news

“Casa Paradiso” is the title of Tommaso Paradiso's new album, a declaration of intent that already reveals his entire obsession with domestic space as a refuge, a haven, a happy thought.

A record that was born from a period in which the singer-songwriter went through non-trivial private and professional transformations and around all this the rental scooter became a personal mythology and creative engine for him.

In the story of Paradiso there is the reflection of a complicated present – pandemics, wars, a general feeling of constant friction – and the almost moral need to defend the right to lightness without falling into innocence. “Casa Paradiso” moves like this: a record that does not ignore the chaos, but tries to orient itself, to welcome, to restore comfort. A pop music that does not claim to explain the world, but which retains the possibility of being a refuge.

Here is his story.

THE INTERVIEW

Tommaso, what does “Casa Paradiso” represent for you?

I believe that each record is a piece of life in compact form. Once upon a time, when I listened to my idols' albums, I devoured them because I wanted to understand how they had lived those three or four years there, what they had gone through. It was like reading a novel from which you learned something about existence. I too am very attached to experience, not to abstract thought: in the records I tell exactly how I have lived the last few years. In this case I couldn't include the most beautiful experience of all, that is, the birth of my daughter, because it came after the writing. But there will be, inevitably.

The album was born in a difficult period for everyone. In the last five years we have been through everything, collectively and individually. I live very much in the present, I absorb what happens inside and outside of me. There are those who say that in times of war one should not be light-hearted, but I see it differently: art must also conciliate, bring back a minimal form of calm. When I feel bad, when anxiety rises, I seek refuge in art: a film that I know by heart, a comedy by Totò, a book that consoles me. “Poverty and nobility” is my Aulin. Lightness is not superficiality: it is a survival mechanism.

How did you find the musical key to the album?

Moving. It was a surprise for me too. I discovered the rental scooter and it changed the way I write. Before I drove the car, scooters, electric bikes… now everything is empty, everything abandoned. I take a scooter wherever I am – Rome, Milan – put on my headphones and start the journey. Looking at houses obsesses me: it's a Morettian vice, as in “Caro Diario”. And while pedaling – or rather: sliding – the melodies, the phrases come to me. Then piano and guitar come later.

The concept of “home” has become the center of your imagination. Where does this obsession come from?

I believe that at 42 the thought is now formed. For me, home is the most important place in the world, the spark of my happy thoughts. Like Peter Pan when he has to think about his children to fly. I think of the house: opening the door, the stairs, the sound of the elevator. The paradox is that today I don't have it, I just sold it and I haven't finished the next one yet. Carolina is very happy with the situation, obviously (laughs). But yes, I'm negotiating: but these don't give an inch.

In April you will return to the sports halls with a new show. What should we expect?

We are defining everything these days. I changed agency, I'm working with new people who are giving me very interesting stimuli. The band is the same, ten musicians on stage playing live, always. This time it will be more complicated to make the setlist, because there is an extra album to add to the repertoire. But I have a rule: anyone who spends 60 euros on a concert must be able to enjoy even the best-known songs. It will be a thoughtful mix, I think very energetic.

Someone defined the album as “melancholic but consolatory”. Do you find yourself?

Totally. I come from two war records: internal, external, collective. This instead is a record that tries to understand how one can be light-hearted in times of war. It's a real question, which I carry with me. I also wrote it in a piece: how can I sing when the world outside is burning? Yet I do it, because music is a space of healing.

You changed record company and live agency. A strong transition. Why this choice?

Because at a certain point you look inside and understand that a relationship has come to an end. With Universal, for example, I had signed and on the same day the whole picture changed: one person leaves, another arrives who is very distant from my tastes and my idea of music. It wasn't my place anymore. Like in a relationship: you try to resist, to talk to each other, but the moment comes when you have to tell yourself the truth and change!

You are one of the most popular in Sanremo forecasts. What do you think? Are you going to Sanremo?

I know, I know… Sooner or later, statistically, I have to go there. Who knows if this year, or next year, or in three years. But in the meantime statistics, at a certain point, have to catch us. So now who knows what it will be. In the next few days we will understand!

THE TRAILER

TRACK BY TRACK

1. Leave me some
Prod. Simonetta
The true beginning of this important project, “Lasciamene un po'” – which climbed to the top of the radio charts – arrived head-on, confirming the unmistakable style of Paradiso: a unique writing, always current with a nostalgic streak, capable of transforming everyday scenes into universal images. The sounds, extremely distinctive, combine the warmth of the 80s with a more direct contemporary pop between synths, guitars and fast-paced rhythms, for a romantic, incisive and extremely engaging song.

2. Maybe
Prod. Matteo Cantaluppi
New preview of “Casa Paradiso” published on Friday 14 November, with Tommaso's distinctive writing – here particularly intimate and observational – returns a lucid and spontaneous portrait of thoughts suspended between instinct, regrets and awareness.

3. Go home
Prod. Simonetta
Refined with several drafts before finding its definitive form, “Tornare a casa” focuses on the driving force of the entire album, an essential impulse, a magnetic desire. The intuition came in a winter a few years ago, while trying out an augmented reality viewer with friends that allows you to set a specific address and year to revisit a place in the past. Tommaso inserts the street of his mother's house, where he grew up, and chooses the 90s: the emotional impact is strong and immediate. The writing of the song began from that spark, perfected over time together with Simonetta.

4. Enjoy it
Prod. Matteo Cantaluppi

Written straight away, in just a few minutes, “Goditela” captures the album's most cheerful and rock energy. Inside, very Italian images: the Panda loaded with surfboards, Santa Marinella and her Roman coast mythology, micro-rituals that become a generational story. The song plays with the melancholy that comes when solar time returns and the days get shorter, transforming it into an invitation to live as long as there is light.

5. Still gorgeous
Prod. Matteo Cantaluppi
“Comunque splendid”, one of the most narrative tracks on the album, is built around nocturnal and domestic rituals which are a source of inspiration for the Roman singer-songwriter. The song is born from a paradox of its own: the vitality that comes when the house turns off, the pleasure of getting lost at night in a stimulating and creative void. Between sounds filed over time and an intimate imagery, the song photographs a dimension suspended between quiet, thoughts and small collective obsessions – such as the eternal boredom of breaks for the national team – restoring an authentic picture of everyday life.

6. 70,000 entries
Prod. Matteo Cantaluppi
A natural bridge between the previous album and “Casa Paradiso”, “70.000 voci” is a song built with images, each verse is a small frame. There is no real plot but a sequence of visual moments that together make up a mosaic of scenes.

7. Intercom Paradiso
Prod. Mamakass
“Citofonare Paradiso” collects Tommaso's most recurring thoughts: time slipping away without us realizing it, the sensation of a past that remains clear while the years pass by quickly, the desire to fly. A piece that combines introspection and luminous visions, returning some of the most persistent themes of Paradiso's imagery.

8. But how do rappers do feat. Setak
Prod. Matteo Cantaluppi, Fabrizio Cesare
Spontaneous and immediate song, born from the natural alchemy between Paradiso and Setak, two long-time friends who meet at the table, in a restaurant, and relive shared moments, laughter and memories.

9. I don't like it
Prod. Matteo Cantaluppi
Born almost as a joke during a day at the beach with the production team, “Non mi va” is the crazy splinter of the album. Between laughter, cult films and moments of pure fooling around, “Gringo” by Sabrina Salerno (the theme song for the comedy “Fratelli d'Italia” directed by Neri Parenti) resurfaces and a new song is born from that cheeky and blatantly pop energy. The song takes shape in a few minutes, retaining the irony and summer lightness that sparked it.

10. Entertainment
Prod. Matteo Cantaluppi
“Spettacolo” is the perfect ending to “Casa Paradiso”: a track that returns to the places of Rome, transforming them into a great emotional geography. The recurring image is that of going out on an electric scooter, which has now become a new obsession, along a climb which for the singer-songwriter is like an internal landscape. The song focuses on a simple truth: even when life has hit you hard, a vibration, a precise moment, is enough to make everything “a spectacle”.
