Kelela surprises with “idea 1”

Music news

The song mixes social criticism with a new sound exploration.

After the launch of Raven (2023), Kelela presented this April 8 “idea 1”a single that marks the beginning of a new stage in his career with Warp Records and that shows a sonic evolution that is distinguished from his previous material.

The song was co-written with the producer Oscar Scheller and the visual artist Janiva Ellisalso counting on the participation of Scarlet House on the guitars. He track stands out for moving away from electronic music, a genre that has defined its identity until now, to delve into a mix different where shoegaze and indie rock coexist, accompanied by a more ethereal atmosphere.

According to Kelela, “idea 1” explores the emotional burden of existing in the current social and political climate, in which people are expected to process and report what is happening around them. The result is a composition that refuses to ignore reality, a message that is also reflected in the official video directed by 91 Rules.

This release places Kelela in a new musical environment, which also functions as a bridge between his past and his present. Thus, it opens the way to a different stage that mixes social criticism with emotion and distortion, beginning a riskier moment in his career.
