LAURA PAUSINI “IO CANTO 2” make music not war

Interviews

With “Io canto 2”, out on February 6, Laura Pausini returns to tackle the riskiest and most revealing act of her pop career: the cover as indirect autobiography.

The album was presented in Milan during a showcase-meeting that took on the contours of a collective ritual: a close encounter with the press, an emotional immersion with the fans, a direct account of a project that looks forward while rereading the past.

An opportunity to focus not only on Io canto 2, but also on the next movements of an artist who, between the Olympics, Sanremo and the world tour, continues to treat pop as a living, demanding, never pacified language.

Io Canto arrives twenty years after the first. Twenty years in which we have changed, grown, still fallen in love with music. Today, as then, there is only one reason why people choose to pay homage to a song, its author or its performer: love.

In these difficult times where hate is the order of the day, I sing to put music at the center.

We sing to express a powerful feeling. We accept taking a step back as authors, to take a giant step forward as human beings. We do it for a real, visceral reason: to defend what we believe in.

In this album I feel like Joan of Arc, without armor but with the microphone in my hand, because when the music calls, I answer. Ready to fearlessly defend everything I love, and I believe in songs. I believe in music, which must be protected by those who live for it.

Music can be accused, judged, misunderstood, underestimated, but we artists are here to shield it. We are an unarmed army, armed only with the beauty of art, which remains the most revolutionary weapon of all.

In a verse by Gialal al-Din Rumi we read 'Out there, beyond what is right and wrong, there is an immense field. We'll meet there.'

Life brings you to know many things, some beautiful, others difficult to accept, words and judgments that you don't recognize yourself in and that hurt you, and when you understand that you have to defend yourself it's painful but you have to do it, finding a way without hurting those who hurt you. I do it with music. Make music, not war.”

THE DISC

It is a real tribute to the singer-songwriters, performers and composers of the history of Italian music, with a broader horizon that also includes songs in foreign languages with a particular connection with Italy: from a Portuguese adaptation by Ana Carolina of La mia storia tra le dita, to a success by the Tribalistas, Ja sei namorar, whose front woman and author, Marisa Monte, has Italian roots; from the French version of Due vite, by Marco Mengoni to the adaptations in German, Portuguese and English of Il cielo in una stanza by Gino Paoli, originally sung by Mina; up to the tribute to one of the greatest pop stars of all time, Madonna, also of Italian origins, of which Laura reinterprets the evergreen La isla bonita.

The songs range from 1960 to 2023, including Felicità, a song in which Laura combines her voice with that of the great late pillar of songwriting, Lucio Dalla.

Laura has chosen to include songs that cover a wide range of time, from the 1960s to the present day. Among the most recent successful songs is the focus track from the launch of this album: 16 MARZO with Achille Lauro, the new single in radio rotation from next Friday 6 February.

Lauro struck me from his first Sanremo – says Laura Pausini.

I wrote to him immediately and over the years a special relationship was born. I like his way of approaching our profession, passionate and obsessive in his attention to detail. '16 Marzo' among his songs particularly struck me, I spoke to him about my desire to make a cover and that I would have loved to duet, and he immediately became involved in the whole project. We worked together on an arrangement that represented both, starting from his world and arriving at a world of ours, we wanted it to unite us and bring contemporaneity and classicism together.”

Ours is a relationship born from mutual respect – continues Achille Lauro.

Getting to know her on a human level was wonderful, we found each other on so many things. I'm very flattered that he chose one of my songs, and this collaboration really enhanced the song.

Laura is an iconic artist, she represents a very focused way of singing and identity; Italian music has an important, melodic value that should not be overlooked, and in an era where globalization tends to flatten everything, '16 Marzo' performed by a world star like her is a great means of bringing all our cultural background to the world. I respect her for the courage, dedication and love she has had in undertaking an international path and a global career for more than 30 years. It is an honor to share this journey with her.”

The song is accompanied by a video clip directed by Gabriele Savino (xPuro), a Borotalco production, available from 2pm on February 6th, together with the release of the song and the album.
