Megadeth is making a comeback with a fierce and fast new album.
Riffs in palettes of twelve, excessively fast tempos and a good big dose of anger; The recipe for a good Megadeth album doesn’t seem complicated on paper, but skill is essential. Proof of this is made with The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!Megadeth’s 16th album and the first to be released in six years.
If this longer than usual delay is explainable by the circumstances, in particular the throat cancer suffered by frontman Dave Mustaine, it seems saving as the group has regained its characteristic roughness. The latter manifests itself from the first riff of the opening track, which tumbles after a sample that Sacré Grail fans will appreciate. Far from putting all its good ideas on the first track, Megadeth has fun riffing at full speed, both on the angry “Life in Hell” and at the end of the album with “We’ll Be Back”.
The group includes breaks at will, inviting rapper Ice-T on “Night Stalkers”, slowing down the pace on “The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!”, or speeding it up on “Dogs of Chernobyl”. The group also indulges in well-felt melodic escapades, without ever falling into an embarrassing digression. The alliance between Dave Mustaine, Kiko Loureiro and Dirk Verbeuren is bearing fruit, combining the know-how of thrash veterans and fresh ideas. Thus, Megadeth flatters the loyal fan while rewarding them with new things. Delightful in every way, this record serves as a comeback after several years of pleasant purring. A success.
