MINA “Delectable unpublished surpluses”: a musical herbarium from different eras

Music news

On 9 October MINA releases “Dilettevoli inedite surpluses”, an album that recovers ten recordings from different eras, from the Seventies up to a new version of “Vento di Passion” by Pino Daniele.

For fifty years, Mina’s thunderous absence/presence has represented a powerful communicative key: every record release – the icon’s only contact with the public – transforms into an awaited and always appreciated event.

This is confirmed by the new album “Dilettevoli inedite surpluses”, out on 9 October 2026.

In her long recording history Mina has alternated albums of unreleased songs with thematic “projects” and collections of covers. According to scholars, the total number of songs recorded and published since the beginning of his career is 1,427. Often, however, some songs did not make it onto the albums due to editorial choices or inconsistency with the ongoing project, ending up in the famous “drawers”: from these the pieces that make up the new album emerged.

This is a musical herbarium with many things from different eras”, explains Massimiliano Pani Mazzini, the artist’s son and spokesperson for years. «For the occasion he brought out some pearls that date back to different periods, projects and recordings.»

These are not just collections of hits: there are also songs which, “due to their beauty, would have deserved better luck”, says Mina through her son. They range from the oldest recording, “Carrettieri” – a song from the Sicilian popular tradition whose recording by Mina dates back to the 1970s – to “Vento di Passion” by Pino Daniele, a slowed down jazz ballad recorded in March 2026 «because something like that was missing». «These songs – adds the producer son – are photographs of their time and are original recordings, faithful to the time. The only intervention was technical: by opening the multitracks we were able to remix and improve the audio performance.»

In addition to the temporal variety, the album offers artistic variety: pieces from different composers and performers, united by the stylistic signature that is Mina’s voice. «Mina – observes Pani – is a clear example of the difference between an interpreter and a singer: she always manages to put emotion and strength into her reinterpretations.»

“Dilettevoli inedite surplus” is a collection of ten different songs, interpreted mostly in an intense and slowed down key, with the exception of “Yes I Know My Way” and the closing with the reinterpretation of “Eleanor Rigby” in a flamenco key, in Gipsy Kings style, with electronic inserts. A divertissement, as Massimiliano defines it: and in fact nothing more.

From Ivano Fossati to the Sicilian tradition, passing through Jimmy Fontana, Mina’s voice always leaves a profound mark on the listener.

THE COVER

Even the iconographic part of the album (available on vinyl and CD) covers different periods: it explores the long partnership between Mina and Mauro Belletti, who has always been the curator of her image, including the cover photo which recalls that of a live album by Peter Gabriel. The “Delectable surpluses” thus become, in the booklet that accompanies the release, also a photographic project, with a collection of shots and images that tell the story of Mina over time.

TRACK BY TRACK

AT THE COST OF DYING – Text: Franca Evangelisti · Music: Fabio Massimo Cantini
Published by Fausto Leali as a 45 rpm single in 1980, it was included the following year in the album A moment of blue. Mina’s version accompanied the Armani fashion show on March 1, 2026 in Milan, the first after the designer’s death.

WIND OF PASSION – Text and music: Pino Daniele
The duet between Pino Daniele and Giorgia was included in the 2007 album My name is Pino Daniele and I live here and then in Giorgia’s 2008 anthology Spirito libero – Viaggi di voci.

SEPTEMBER – Text and music: Ivano Fossati
One of the most beautiful songs by Ivano Fossati; it was the bonus track of the deluxe version of Mina Fossati (2019), now out of print. It is the only song on the album that is not a cover or unreleased. Here it is proposed in an intense version, voice and piano.

SAD SONG – Text: Roberto Lerici · Music: Gianni Ferrio
Originally composed as an orchestral version for the flute by Severino Gazzelloni with the title Romantic Fantasia, the piece was revived by Mina with a text by Roberto Lerici in the last episode of Milleluci on 11 May 1974.

CARRETTIERI – Text and music: Alfonso Gibilaro
Song in Sicilian dialect composed by Alfonso Gibilaro and included in the collection Four Sicilian Miniatures, published in London in April 1949.

MY SERENADE – Text: Jimmy Fontana, Mogol · Music: Gianni Boncompagni, Italo Nicola Greco
Jimmy Fontana’s song won the 1967 edition of the Un disco per l’estate event. The version on the album is vocals, acoustic guitar and piano.

DANS MON ÎLE – Text: Maurice Pon · Music: Henri Salvador
Composed in 1957, it was released by Barclay the following year on a “Super 45 tours” (a 45 rpm single with four songs) performed by Henri Salvador.

VIERNO – Text: Armando De Gregorio · Music: Vincenzo Acampora
Composed in 1945, it was recorded by the singer and actress Ebe De Paulis, nicknamed “The Diva of Radio”. It was revived in 1977 by Fausto Leali on a moderately successful 45 rpm single.

YES I KNOW MY WAY – Lyrics and music: Pino Daniele
Second track by the Neapolitan singer-songwriter present on the album, included in Pino Daniele’s fourth album, “Vai mo’”, from 1981.

ELEANOR RIGBY – Lyrics and music: John Lennon, Paul McCartney
Written mainly by Paul McCartney (with contributions also from John Lennon and, according to some versions, Ringo Starr), it was released on 5 August 1966 on the Beatles album Revolver and on the same day as a double-A-side 45 rpm, with Yellow Submarine on the other side.
