Do you remember The Espantiburones? That DreamWorks animated film that took us to the bottom of the ocean in 2004 and that closed with a great song: Car Washperformed by Christina Aguilera and with the stellar collaboration of Missy Elliott. Well, more than 20 years later, fans are still looking for it on platforms… and can't find it. And it is not in any of them.
Now, Missy Elliot wanted to send a message. And, like thousands of fans who grew up with The Shark Scarer, wants to listen to the song again on the platforms.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the rapper tagged Universal Music Group and Geffen Records (the labels that were behind the song) to ask them to upload the song to streaming services. It all started when she responded to a fan who regretted not being able to hear her:

“@UMG @GeffenRecords fans have tagged me asking why the song 'Car Wash' from the #SharkTale soundtrack isn't on the platforms. Can you help? A lot of people miss it,” Missy wrote.
This song closed the film and was a version of the classic Rose Roycebut with a very 2000s touch: Christina on lead vocals and Missy dropping bars full of marine references, as “Y'all can make your bets, y'all small tuna fish, I'm one big catch / Shark slayer, bow down player”. Pure nostalgia for those who grew up with that film.
Missy Elliot, in a good moment
Meanwhile, Missy continues to receive praise for her legacy. at the gala Give Her FlowHERS From Femme It Forward, artist Victoria Monét assured that it is time to give Missy the recognition she deserves:
“Her show is incredible. She still acts like she's 20 years old. We need more tributes to her because she has done so much and influenced our childhood,” Monét said on the red carpet.
Will we hear again Car Wash on Spotify and company? For now, the ball is in the record companies' court. But if one thing is clear, it's that Missy Elliott doesn't plan on letting this aquatic anthem get lost at the bottom of the digital ocean.
