“I try not to support corporations that support the regime with huge donations, just to cover their backs, while people are getting shot in the streets of America”writes Neil Young.
Two days after trashing Amazon for Jeff Bezos' support for Donald Trump, Neil Young attacks Apple and Verizon for the same reasons. In a new post on the Neil Young Archives, Young writes that he's going to get rid of his Verizon flip phone and stop giving money to Apple.
“ I can't use a Verizon phone », he writes. “ Verizon supports Trump, with big dollars. What can I do? I'm checking with our office to see if I can get a T-Mobile flip phone. T-Mobile does not support the fascist Trump regime…I try not to support companies that support the regime with huge donations, just to cover their backs, while people are getting shot in the streets of America, not just in Minnesota, America! »
Young uses an Apple computer, but he's not happy with it. “ I need to stop and reevaluate », he writes. “ More updates! This feeds Apple, Apple supports “Le Régime”. I stop right away to call my sales manager and make sure I'm not updating any Apple products. Ok, she tells me I can keep the computer. He's already paid. But no more updates. This money is going to Apple now. Tim Cook, the CEO, bends over backwards to support the regime! He was at Melania's premiere at the White House the other night, making out. Yuck! What a world. »
“ I need to re-evaluate everything I do », he concludes. “ I will sue Apple if my computer doesn't work without the new expensive update. What about Warner Brothers? »
Call for boycott and new songs
Elsewhere in the post, Young links to an article listing contact information for the CEOs of 11 major companies – Amazon, Meta, American Airlines, AT&T, Microsoft, Home Depot, Verizon, FedEx, UPS, Dell and Apple – and urges readers to contact them. “ Let them know that you are opposed to their dealings with ICE and to ICE's un-American and illegal actions, including wrongful killings, tear gassing, kidnappings, and arrests of innocent people. »
On Tuesday, Young hosted a live Zoom chat with premium members of the Neil Young Archives. He told them he had written six songs for his next album. “ One of them is really interesting “, he said. “ I call it “The Second Song.” I woke up one morning thinking of this melody. I was like, “Have I already written this or is this already a song?” » I tried to think: “What is this?” » I ended up thinking that it must be a song that I had written, but I couldn't figure out which one. So I wrote a bunch of new lyrics and so I have a second song on it now. I'm excited about this one. And I love all the others I have going on. »
He even shared the lyrics of a song he was writing: “ Soon I'll be able to leave / So I wanted you to know / It was Christmas in the Rockies / Like a summer without snow / The Red Corsair was playing at the movies / It's the one you really have to see / The water is like diamonds / And the ships are on the sea / The answer to our questions floats in the mist / And the revolution comes like a fighter with his fist raised. »
A fan asked him if he wanted to follow in Bob Dylan's footsteps and create a biopic about his life. “ I don't know how you can do that while you're alive “, he replied. “ I know people who are working on something, but I don't want anything to do with it. I prefer to make another record. You imagine being there and having someone make a film and you go (goofy voice), “Yeah, that's a good film about me.” »
Finally, Young commented on his recent 80th birthday. “ I thought I would be scared “, he said. “ I was afraid of being 80 all the time until I was 80. And then I said to myself: “I’m 80 years old. So what? Who cares? » It doesn't matter anymore. Many things that mattered before no longer matter. I like to be healthy. I like to be physical. I like to go out and walk. I don't like going to the gym, but I walked three miles (about 5 km) yesterday at 8,500 feet (2,600 meters) above sea level. This is what I like to do. »
