Not just Crans Montana, the other massacres caused by fireworks set off in discos
There's been a lot of talk these days about the Crans Montana massacre, where on New Year's Eve the fire in the Le Constellation bar caused 40 deaths and 116 injuries.
Unfortunately, however, this was not an isolated case in Europe and around the world.
Also in 2025 and again in December, a fire in a nightclub in Arpora, in the Indian state of Goa, killed 25 people, including kitchen workers and tourists.
In March 2025, a fire at Club Pulse in Kocani, North Macedonia resulted in 63 deaths and over 200 injuries. The flames would also have been triggered in this case by a pyrotechnic effect that hit the roof of the venue during a very crowded evening.
In 2024, in Istanbul, 29 people died in a fire that broke out in the Masquerade nightclub, located on the lower floors of a 16-story residential building, while the venue was closed for renovations.
In 2015, the fire at the Colectiv club in Bucharest, which also occurred due to pyrotechnics used during a concert, caused the death of 64 people and injured 190. Remaining in Europe, in 2009, in Russia, in the Lame Horse club in Perm, there was a fire caused by fireworks that hit the ceiling causing the death of 152 people.
In 2013, over 200 people died in the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria, Brazil, the cause of the fire was also due to a pyrotechnic fire fired by the singer of the band who was performing in the club and which set the ceiling on fire. This tragedy is also told in a miniseries on Netflix entitled The Night That Will Not Pass.
In the United States, in 1942 there was what is described as the worst nightclub fire in the history of the country. It happened in the Cocoanut Grove area of Boston, where 492 people died. Also in the USA, in 2003, there was a fire at The Station nightclub in Rhode Island, which led to the death of 100 people and the injury of over 200. The fire was once again caused by some fireworks set off by the manager of the group that was performing in the club.
