Demi-Lovato-Its-Not-That-Deep-album-2025

“It's Not That Deep” the new album by Demi Lovato sounds like a declaration of intent, but also like a preventive defense.

Eleven tracks to tell the world — and perhaps herself — that not everything has to be heavy, painful or redemptive. Yet, in that attempt at lightness, Demi Lovato often stumbles on the surface: the album is bright, lucid, but rarely profound.

Produced by Zhone, the album reworks the dance-pop of the origins, updating it with satin synths and beats that flirt with post-Y2K club culture. There's energy, there's sex appeal, there's the desire to shake off years of turbulence. But between a drop and a well-designed hook, a certain mechanicalness is also perceived, as if the return to lightness was more an exercise in style than an emotional urgency.

“Fast” opens the album with a rush towards pure pleasure: breakbeat, self-irony and no fear of pop. “Here All Night” is the manifesto of this new era, an anthem that dances on the border between pain and disengagement. “Kiss” is the catchiest single, a banger built for TikTok but also the moment where Lovato seems to really be having fun.

Then there is “Frequency”, an explicit tribute to the Madonna of Erotica: sensual, dirty, free, but perhaps a little too smooth to become a cult.
In the final songs – “Before I Knew You” and “Ghost” – the most human Lovato re-emerges, the one who transforms the wound into melody and doesn't need auto-tune to sound real.

“It's Not That Deep” isn't a misstep, but it's not a revelation either.

It's a record that slides well, dances better, but remains confined to an aesthetic dimension that seduces without surprising.

Lovato looks like a Taylor Swift who wants to dance.
Rediscover the desire to move, but not always the desire to take risks. Maybe that's the point: not everything has to be deep — but a little more giddiness and experimentation wouldn't hurt.
