U2 unveils “Street of Dreams”, first single from its new album

Music news

“Street of Dreams” is the first single released by U2 from its upcoming studio album, expected later this year, in the run-up to its 50th anniversary.

Two months after teasing their new track during a video shoot on a crowded Mexico City street, U2 released “Street of Dreams,” the first single from their upcoming studio album, scheduled for release before the end of the year. This joyous and anthemic track was produced by their long-time collaborator Jacknife Lee.

The music video for “Street of Dreams” was filmed while the group was in Mexico City to attend the Street Child World Cup finals at the Parque Ecológico Lago de Texcoco. Filming took place near Plaza Santo Domingo in the middle of a thunderstorm, and one family invited the musicians onto the balcony of their apartment after the band's generator failed in the rain.

U2 has not yet announced the title of this new album, but it will be their first real disc of unreleased songs since Songs of Experiencein 2017. In the years that followed, the band has sold out arenas in North America and Europe, exported its Joshua Tree 30 tour internationally, delivered stripped-down versions of its classics on the album Songs of Surrender in 2023, and became the first group to perform at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Earlier this year, he also shared two six-track EPs, Days of Ash And Easter Lilywhich tackled heavy subjects, between politics and spiritual renewal.

At the exit ofEaster Lily in April, Bono warned fans that the upcoming album would take a different tone. “We're in the studio, still working on a loud, messy, 'unreasonably colorful' album, made to be played LIVE… that's where U2 lives,” he said. “We continue to see vibrant rock & roll as an act of resistance to all this horror that parades on our small screens. »

U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. had skipped the Sphere residency while he recovered from neck surgery. But he returned for the sessions that produced the two EPs and the upcoming album. “I'm not going to lie, it wasn't easy missing the Sphere residency due to injury,” Mullen confided in February. “But I ignored my symptoms for several years and gritted my teeth. It turns out I'm not invincible: when you don't listen to your body, consequences are inevitable. »

No tour has been publicly discussed, but U2 has never released an album without defending it with concerts in the four corners of the planet. This would be the first time Larry Mullen Jr. would perform on stage with the band again since 2019.

At the end of September, U2 will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its formation. The group is practically the only big name of this era to have preserved its original formation perfectly intact.
