A Golden Goose That Just Won’t Quit
When someone owns a golden goose, you can bet they’ll do everything they can to make sure it lays eggs as often as possible. Mariah Carey knows this better than anyone, so she makes certain her syrupy, arguably pointless (yet for some mysterious reason, incredibly, incredibly popular) hit, All I Want for Christmas Is You, kickstarts its annual comeback as soon as the pumpkins hit the compost bin.
Every Year, Like Clockwork
Each year, the singer decrees that it’s officially time to play on repeat the song that brings her mountains of royalties. And 2025, of course, is no exception to the iron rules of capitalism. On Saturday, November 1st, Mariah posted a video on her social media where she triumphantly announces that
“It’s Time!!!”
to start the end-of-year festivities.
No Rest Between Holidays—It’s Business As Usual
Barely a moment to fold up the Halloween costumes, and never mind that Thanksgiving is still several days away—business is business. What’s more, Mariah Carey has spun her song into every conceivable format: children’s books, TV series, animated films… No need to read or listen to these versions, though: they’re just as sugary and cringeworthy as the “original.”
A Ritual with (Maybe) a Wink of Humor
Fortunately (or not), the annual video at least shows Mariah Carey having a laugh at her own expense (or does she?). This year, she appears dressed as an angel, feigning astonishment when she discovers an elf has stolen her Christmas presents. In a tongue-in-cheek twist, unionized Christmas elves—horror of horrors!—decide to cancel Christmas altogether, blaming Mariah for making them clock in earlier and earlier every year.
But not to worry: Mariah quickly switches outfits, slips in a product placement or two into her video (hey, this is America), and—just like that—Santa’s sleigh and his trusty reindeer take off into the holiday night sky.
