In Uganda, a 70-year-old woman gives birth to twins: a miracle after years of infertility
Never say never! Just ask Safina Namukwaya, a 70-year-old Ugandan woman who defied the laws of biology when she gave birth to twins. Her extraordinary feat was described as a “miracle” by her doctor, Dr. Edward Tamale Sali, in an interview with AFP.
Originally from Masaka, 120 kilometers west of Uganda’s capital, Safina gave birth to healthy twins—a boy and a girl—at a hospital in Kampala. The birth is especially miraculous because Safina had battled years of negative stigma due to her infertility.
For a long time, the septuagenarian was labeled a “cursed woman” because she was unable to have children before the age of 67. She had only given birth to her first child three years ago. These two pregnancies were made possible thanks to in vitro fertilization.

Her husband’s disappointment with the birth
With her first husband, who passed away in 1992, Safina had no children. In 1996, she met her current partner, who never expected to become a father at such an age. So much so that he didn’t even attend the birth of the twins. “Maybe he’s upset that I gave birth to twins… out of fear of the responsibilities that come with it,” Safina told AFP.
Even worse, according to Safina, her husband left her during her pregnancy, as he has not been in contact with her since she was hospitalized. “Men don’t like to hear that you’re having more than one child. Even after I was admitted, my husband never showed up.”
