Interview with Ivan Ferreiro

Interviews

A legendary career for music in Spanish.

Ivan Ferreiro He comes to Mexico as part of his tour Today x Yesterday. Regarding this visit, we spoke with the Spanish musician, former leader of The Piratesabout his solo aspirations and his new musical remakes.

Indie Rocks!: 35 years of experience are easy to say, but they have been quite a life story. How do you feel? How is Iván Ferreiro doing after 35 years of career?

Ivan Ferreiro: Well, I’m very good. The truth is that I think I am in a very good moment in my life. I would tell you that it is the best moment of my life, but next year may be better. So we’re going to be cautious with that. But yes, I’m in a great moment, really enjoying playing, really enjoying life and, well, I can’t complain; quite the opposite.

GO!: Enjoying life also with this new release, the EP Today for Yesterday. Tell us why releasing an EP at this time, after so many years making records.

IF: Well, it’s an EP of songs that already existed, old songs: songs from The Piratessongs of mine and my brother, from when we started the race. It was 35 years of my career and also 20 years of my solo career. We were going to do this tour to celebrate those 35 years and we thought it was good to accompany it with a sample of what was going to happen on it.

So we decided to record three songs The Pirates for side A and then include a new version of “Turnedo”which is our flagship song, our star song. In addition, we added the original demos: the one my brother made Amaro so that I knew the song and the one I did later. We liked to think that there were our first recordings together, those of my brother and I, and also the last ones, which are these songs by The Pirates.

The truth is that it is an EP that came about a bit by accident. We decided to record something to show what the tour was about and we ended up immersed in this whole process, having a lot of fun. It’s an EP that I really like.

GO!: Tell us what this journey has been like of returning to these songs that, as you yourself say, are flagship songs, emblematic songs, but returning to them and reversing them being who you are today, in 2026.

IF: Well, there’s a little bit of what you just said. We wanted to see who we are now, who I am in this moment. It was not so much a nostalgic act as an act of reaffirming who we are today.

I liked that idea of celebrating 35 years, but not from the past, but from the present and from the place we are now. The truth is that my career has gone very well; Every year things go a little better and I haven’t stopped releasing new albums. Already on the previous tour, that of Pop Trenchit went super well for us.

So, when the time came to celebrate these 35 years, I refused to celebrate the past. I preferred to celebrate the present, where we are. I guess if we’re doing well now, it’s because we did some things well in the past. I’m more interested in making a kind of portrait or analysis of who I am now. I think the tour is a bit about that. Sometimes, to know who we are, we have to look back.

GO!: Return to our roots and discover what we find there. As you yourself say, something connected at the time and that is why these songs remain so emblematic. Now that the demos have been published and also this new version of “Turnedo”, do you think the song has been given new meaning? What new arrangements or elements are added to this version?

IF: Well, with “Turnedo” We made a game based on the video clip we recorded back in the day. My brother and I had made a very cheap video, the two of us in a room, with toy instruments. It was probably the cheapest video that could be made at that time.

We wanted to recover that spirit a little and, in fact, we recorded this new version live. The main thing is that, when we record “Turnedo” For the first time, we were two brothers who wanted to make music. Now there are no longer two of us: we are seven or eight people on stage. What we wanted was for the band to appear and play with complete freedom. That’s always kind of been our philosophy.

I’m not very given to telling anyone what to play. I prefer to present a song and have everyone contribute their own thing. I think the journey of “Turnedo” It reflects just that: the path of two brothers who ended up forming a much larger family.

And now that we are on this whole tour, there are also some dates coming up in Mexico. Of course we want to touch on this topic there.

GO!: What surprises do you have prepared for him? Metropolitan Theater next September 3?

IF: I’m going with the whole band, which is a fantastic band. We have a repertoire that we have been playing since May, so it is already well-rounded and I am super happy with it.

I am also very happy with it setlist. This time we are going to play in the Metropolitan Theaterwhich is a very important place. I’m going with great enthusiasm and, why not say it, also with a little fear.

Don’t miss out on Ivan Ferreiro this September 3rd in the Metropolitan Theater!
