The French artist talks about experimentation, touring and the chapter that will mark her next album.
The French artist Pomme is about to begin a new stage in his career with new music: his single “des excuses” marks what we will soon see, along with the global success of “Ma meilleure ennemie” next to Stromaeincluded in the soundtrack from the series Arcane: League of Legends. This spring he embarked on a solo tour of Latin America with two very special performances in Guadalajara and Mexico City. We had the opportunity to talk with Pomme about everything that has happened in his career and what is coming.
Indie Rocks!: First of all, thank you very much for your time.
Pompe: Thanks to you.
GO!: How do you feel about returning to Mexico?
Q: I feel very good. The only thing is that I had a red-eye flight from Buenos Aires and I didn't really sleep, so physically I'm a mess, but in my head I'm so happy to be here.
GO!: Now you come back to do one of your biggest concerts in Mexico right now, in the Metropolitan Theater. How do you feel? What can we expect from this show? What can we expect from the theater experience?
Q: I feel really good and lucky to be able to play again after only two years and that people come and still buy tickets to my show, which is crazy. Once again I will be alone on stage like two years ago, but the new thing is that I am going to play some new songs from my next album, so it will be like an exclusive experience. I also have a small video installation and I feel very good playing in a theater because I love theaters and I feel that they fit a lot with my show: being alone on stage and with that, it is really an experience where the audience is part of the concert because I don't have a band. I'm going to connect a lot with people and, depending on what happens with the public, the show is not the same. So, in my opinion, it's a nice experience, and I feel very privileged that Mexico is, in fact, the biggest show on the tour.
GO!: You are also back in Guadalajara.
Q: Yeah.
GO!: The stage C3TRUE? Do you remember well and did you see differences between the public in Mexico City and that in Guadalajara?
Q: I remember them both as quite intense, but I feel that in Guadalajara, being a smaller venue, it is more intimate. In Mexico City it was very impressive for me because there were a lot of people singing the lyrics and everything. But I think the intensity of the people was the same; It's just that Guadalajara, being a smaller place, was more intimate. Maybe Guadalajara was a little more intense; people were very, very excited.
GO!: These shows are part of your tour through Latin America. What do you learn on this tour of different countries? Have you had good experiences?
Q: Yes, it's amazing. I don't stay long enough in each country to really soak up the cultures or vibes. For example, in Brazil we stayed literally 24 hours, so I didn't even have time to walk around the city; we actually took a 20 minute walk and saw a park. But I was able to take a day off in Santiago de Chile and Buenos Aires, so I was able to see neighborhoods, good restaurants and get a little feel for the place. I feel very lucky to be able to travel to these countries where I have the privilege of singing and playing in front of people. I tell people every night that they are actually my landscapes, because I don't see almost anything of the city due to lack of time; When I look at people's faces it is a way to connect with the culture, and that is beautiful.
GO!: Speaking of your music, you have many listeners due to the collaboration with Arcane.
Q: Yeah.
IR!: How does that make you feel? Do you see people at your concerts who knew you because of that song?
Q: Not really at the shows; maybe there are some people who came for Arcanebut I noticed it a lot on my social networks and Instagram: it was crazy how many people followed me later and started listening to my music. But since it's just a song, it's something very online; It was a phenomenon around the series and the audience that listens to the song and watches the series are very online people. So I felt it a lot in my networks. I don't know if people bought tickets for that song, because they don't tell me, so maybe some did. I like to sing the song in Latin America because here everyone knows it and it is very nice to have a song that everyone knows.
GO!: A few months ago you released a single. How is it different from your previous albums?
Q: Are you referring to September or next year?
GO!: The one in September or the one that comes next.
Pomme: Yes. I worked with Aaron Dessnerwho is an American producer, and I feel like I'm at a point in my career where I want to try new things. I don't want to make the same music over and over again. There is something in my music that is installed and that defines me: that acoustic, minimalist, sad folk vibe, but I also want to experiment. It was nice to work with Aaron because it opened up a whole new world for me; He's a great producer and also a good person, so it was really nice.
GO!: You say you're preparing new music. What can we expect?
Q: I have a single coming out in about two weeks. It's much more grunge, more rock; It's literally the most grunge thing I've ever done, and I love it because I listen to a lot of rock and grunge bands. When I was 12 my favorite band was Green DayI was crazy about rock bands and grunge, and I had never experienced it in my music. It's the first time I've done it, so I'm very happy to be able to play that song at festivals; I think it's going to feel amazing. The rest of the album is something else; There's this grunge song that I put out in June and then the rest of the album, which is still a mystery, will be different too.
GO!: I also had a similar experience with Green Day at the same age.
Q: Did you really like him?
GO!: Yeah.
Q: Oh, how good! Nowadays I listen to bands like boygenius and a lot of grunge bands that I love. I feel like the song I'm going to release is very inspired by them.
GO!: What else can we expect for your career? New tour, new experiences?
Q: I am open to everything. I want to be able to tour with my band; I would love for my band to accompany me to other countries because until now I have toured mainly with them in France and I love them very much. I've been touring solo for 10 years and two or three years ago I met an incredible band, so one of my goals is to tour the world with them, return to Latin America and bring the same show we do in France to other places. I hope that the new album allows me to meet new people and have new experiences. I also want to tour Japan for the first time; I've never toured there and I would love to because I lived in Japan for three and a half months in 2024 and I love it. I'm excited to tour with the band again, release an album and travel the world again. Even though I'm already spinning, I love spinning. I just hope that my health is fine because sometimes it is very intense, I get tired or my voice suffers from all the traveling and shows. That's the only thing that worries me.
GO!: Perfect. Anything else you want to add for this interview?
Q: I love Mexico and I can't wait for the show. I think it's going to be amazing and I just want to thank people for buying tickets, because it really means a lot to me.
