Ultimo's seventh album says it all from the title: The day he was waiting for it is without a doubt July 4th, the date of the live record in Tor Vergata with 250,000 coupons pulverized in three hours.
This album perhaps wasn't created for precise artistic reasons, but it exists to serve the concert, not vice versa. It functions as a soundtrack for a collective event rather than as a musical work in its own right. Not yet another live show and not a best of but a real album of unreleased songs.
From the point of view of music criticism he has nothing really new to say, much less on a musical level where there are no big surprises.
Ultimo has been working on the same vocabulary for years: infinity as a fixed symbol on the cover, time that passes away, missed adolescence, love told at the age of thirty with the same intensity with which it would be told at sixteen.
We were one hundred years oldone of the songs in the setlist, alone sums up the entire sample: anticipated nostalgia for a present that has not yet passed.
It is a tried and tested mechanism that works, as demonstrated by sales, but it is also a mechanism that Niccolò does not feel the need to update. The three singles released in advance confirm the stability of the model: spacious melodies designed for the lawn of a stadium, choruses that function more as choruses than as phrases to remember. The production aims straight at the hearts of its admirers, far from any risk.
It is a record that includes ten songs and each one has a connection with a different moment in my life that I associate in an absolutely personal way with one of the tattoos I wear.
Ultimo himself talks about it but they don't add anything significant to his discography other than material to quickly memorize (clearly for his devotees) and sing at the top of your lungs in Tor Vergata.
“The day I was waiting for” has nothing to prove to those who follow Ultimo since “Planets” forward (and they are a multitude), and probably doesn't want to show it.
It exists as a stage in an artistic and intimate journey greater than himself, the physical object that the “Last Ones” will take home to remember an unforgettable night in July.
As a record, strictly speaking, it says little new. As a prologue to that event, it does exactly its job.
