Alexia is back, and she does it with the luminous energy of someone who still wants to make the world dance.
After a summer spent on international stages and packed dancefloors, the queen of Italian dance renews Followhis latest single, in a version signed by DJ and producer Ale De Tuglie – one of the most refined and visionary names on the international electronic scene.
In this meeting between different generations and sensibilities, Alexia's powerful and unmistakable voice merges with De Tuglie's magnetic grooves, resulting in a song that invites us to rediscover authenticity and lightness, in a time dominated by the frenzy of social media.
On the eve of her next big live dates, Alexia talks about herself with the sincerity and determination she always has.
THE INTERVIEW
Let's start from Followyour latest project, especially with this new version signed by Ale De Tuglie. How did the idea come about and what different sonic approach is there compared to your original version?
The desire to make people dance. It came from there. Already a year ago, when I started collaborating with Martina from Dragonette, this crazy desire for lightness returned to me.
I felt in people's eyes the desire to go back – not back, but to relive lighter moments.
So I found the right key: rediscovering my songs with new arrangements.Follow gave me great satisfaction because many people felt called into question by the text, and I wanted to make it available on today's dancefloors too, to understand how to dance now.
From here the collaboration with Ale, a friend of one of the authors of the song, was born.
Were you curious to understand how young people approach remixes today?
Very, very much. In the past I worked with DJs who slowed down or sped up my voice, changed tones… it almost felt like I was teleporting! (laughs) Instead Ale “decomposed” and “recomposed” the piece in a totally new way, giving it a new life. It was a fun and effective experiment: we tested it before release, and the response was great.
In fact you have already brought it live, between concerts and dancefloors around Europe…
Yes, and I must say that the track never emptied! These dates gave me a lot of energy, the desire to start again and take everything more lightly. I feel that it is the result of years of work and gratitude towards an audience that has never forgotten me, even when I stopped to live my life and be a mother.
Now my children are grown up, independent… and they dance with me too!
Among your next appointments there is a big live show in Mexico and then the super party at Fabrique in Milan. What kind of show will it be?
A project that I care a lot about. I'm working alone to understand what I want to tell: my story, my changes, even the moments of rejection towards myself. Because at a certain point I rejected my image, I no longer recognized myself. Today I understood that everything I studied – from opera singing to soul – remained within me. My songs can be transformed in a thousand ways, but my voice remains. I want to tell all this with music and images, and above all make it a party.
If you could meet your 90s self today, what advice would you give her?
I would tell her: “Open your eyes, open your heart, experience this wonderful moment”. Sometimes I was too tired, I missed the little things.
I wasn't fully aware of the effort that awaited me, I was often alone. Today, if I were in the shoes of those who managed me then, I would be more maternal. Success is beautiful but also bastard: it can make you dizzy and then abandon you.
We need to live it, but also build something lasting with it.
What if you could talk to yourself in twenty years instead?
I would say to myself: “You lived a full life, you did what you loved, you traveled the world.”
I have no regrets. Even mistakes have taught me a lot. Maybe I gave up on crazy opportunities, but I wasn't ready.
Today, everything I do I carry out with awareness and respect for those who follow me. I'm happy: I achieved everything I wanted.
Last question, who do you like in contemporary music today?
The Weeknd, absolutely. It's the new Michael Jackson: crazy productions, very strong image, innovative in sounds and concepts. Then Raye, an incredible author who is one of the most interesting artists today. In Italy I really like Joan Thiele and Alex Wyse.
